*Please note the Digital Manufacturing Design Innovation Institute (DMDII) is now called Manufacturing x Digital (MxD)*
Iowa State University is a Tier 1 partner in the new Digital Manufacturing Design Innovation Institute (DMDII) with affiliated partners across the country.
This website is intended to help industry, government and other academic visitors find ISU researchers that are interested in teaming on a DMDII proposal, and to aid in starting the proposal process.
The DMDII is the nation’s flagship research institute for applying cutting-edge digital technologies to reduce the time and cost of manufacturing, strengthen the capabilities of the U.S. supply chain, and reduce acquisition costs for DoD. The DMDII will both develop and demonstrate digital manufacturing technologies and deploy and commercialize these technologies across key manufacturing industries.
Chicago-based UI LABS was awarded $70 million from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to fund the project. This award is leveraged by commitments of approximately $250 million from industry, academic, government and community partners.

More info about MxD
MxD (Manufacturing x Digital) is where innovative manufacturers go to forge their futures. In partnership with the Department of Defense, MxD equips U.S. factories with the digital tools and expertise they need to begin building every part better than the last. As a result, our approximately 300 partners increase their productivity and win more business.
MxD operates from a nearly 100,000-square-foot innovation center near downtown Chicago. Its factory floor features some of the most advanced manufacturing equipment in the world. Since its founding, the institute has awarded more than $90 million to more than 60 research and development projects across 35 states. MxD also leads cybersecurity and workforce development efforts to ensure that digital manufacturing has the security and talent it needs to be effectively deployed.
Partners such as Iowa State University collaborate with MxD through:
- Projects: Collaborative R&D focused on in-factory applications and measurable impact
- Workshops: Topic-focused sessions where partners work together to solve industry-wide challenges and drive investment
- Testbeds: creating an experimental factory floor to demo and test emerging digital manufacturing and design technologies
